Through years of learning, refining, and sometimes failing, we have shaped a system that works. That journey has led us to success in the show ring and in producing profitable, functional animals for real farms. This course series exists so that new and aspiring Kalahari Red farmers don’t have to learn the hard way — by making costly or fatal mistakes before the basics are in place.
This isn’t a theory course—it’s a foundation course… Step 1 in mastering the basics, whether you’re new to goat breeding or training a herder to care for your herd when you’re away.
Each module ties into one complete production system: accurate record keeping, body condition scoring, feeding science, effective vaccination planning, well-prepared mating seasons, and practical fencing and housing. Miss one, and the system weakens. Master them together, and the Kalahari Red becomes one of the most rewarding investments a farmer can make.
This course is for those who want to start right, grow sustainably, and farm with confidence. Because when the basics are done properly, success is not a gamble — it is the result.
Beginners Course for Goats: 1.1 Introduction to selection and goals (21.18)
Starting a Kalahari Red stud isn’t about numbers—it’s about selection. The foundation animals you choose will either accelerate progress or limit your herd for years. Stud standards aren’t just for the show ring—they ensure fertility, adaptability, and long-term productivity.
At Kilifi Creek, our course teaches you how to evaluate animals, introduce genetics wisely, and set clear breeding goals so every mating moves your herd forward. Build intentionally, improve continuously, and measure success with confidence.
A successful Kalahari Red stud isn’t built by chance—it’s built by choosing right, every step of the way.
Beginners course:1.2 record keeping: (40.09)
When key information is missing—mating dates, birthing histories, vaccination records—farm decisions turn into guesswork. Accurate recordkeeping transforms uncertainty into control, protecting herd health, genetic progress, and farm profitability.
At Kilifi Creek, we teach practical, real-world stud recordkeeping that works under pressure and in the realities of a working goat farm. Good records don’t just save time—they safeguard animals, money, and peace of mind.
Farm with confidence, not memory. Strive for Excellence.
Beginners course: 1.3 body condition scoring: (25.06)
When animals are under- or over-conditioned, productivity suffers, and money is wasted. Body condition scoring removes the guesswork, allowing you to match feed, medication, and breeding decisions to what each animal truly needs.
At Kilifi Creek, we teach practical body condition scoring using one simple principle: to measure is to know. With the right skills and tools, you make informed decisions before losses occur—optimising health, fertility, and performance across your herd.
Because on a successful goat farm, body condition doesn’t guide decisions—it defines them.
Beginners course: 1.4 feeding and other resources (52.04)
When goats eat well but still lose condition, the problem isn’t appetite—it’s feeding management. Understanding feeding science shows why roughage is the foundation of rumen health, how to adapt animals safely to ration changes, and how to match feed quality to each stage of production.
At Kilifi Creek, our feeding course turns feed into a management tool rather than a gamble. You learn to feed with intention, protect your veld, and build healthier, more productive goats for long-term sustainability.
Because successful goat farming isn’t about feeding more—it’s about feeding right.
Beginners Course for Goats: 1.5 Vaccinating your herd (26.25)
When disease breaks out despite vaccination, or parasites stop responding to treatment, the problem is rarely the product—it’s the timing and strategy. Effective vaccination is about giving the right treatment to the right animals at the right time.
At Kilifi Creek, our vaccination course teaches a practical, real-world system for vaccines, deworming, and tick control that prevents resistance and protects immunity when it matters most. You move from reacting to problems to preventing them, with healthier animals and lower long-term costs.
Beginners Course for Goats: 1.6 Preparation for mating (26.47)
Missed cycles, exhausted bucks, and poorly timed kidding aren’t breeding failures—they’re preparation failures. Successful mating starts long before the buck enters the camp, with correct timing, nutrition, health management, and realistic buck-to-doe ratios.
At Kilifi Creek, our mating course teaches you how to plan breeding with intention, aligning genetics, feeding, and health into a clear, predictable strategy. The result is uniform kidding, easier management, and improved profitability.
Because on a successful goat farm, mating season doesn’t just happen—it’s designed.
Beginners Course for Goats: 1.7 Fencing and Night Camps (08.16)
Goats escaping, destructive behavior, and chaotic management aren’t discipline problems—they’re infrastructure problems. Proper fencing and thoughtful housing protect your animals, your resources, and your time, while reducing stress and disease.
At Kilifi Creek, our fencing and housing course teaches practical, real-world systems that keep goats safe, organized, and productive. You stop chasing problems and start running a controlled, efficient farm.
Because on a successful goat farm, good fencing doesn’t just keep goats in—it keeps problems out
